How the K53 learner's licence test works

A plain-English guide to the South African learner's test — the three sections, the pass marks, the time limit, what to bring, and how to walk in ready.

What the learner's licence test is

The learner's licence is the written, multiple-choice test you pass before you may drive with a qualified driver and book your driving (K53) test. It checks that you know the rules of the road, can recognise road signs and signals, and understand the basic controls of your vehicle. It is taken on a touchscreen or on paper at a Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC).

Which questions you get depends on your licence code: Code 1 (motorcycles), Code 2 (light motor vehicles up to 3 500 kg) or Code 3 (heavy vehicles). The vehicle-controls section is tailored to the code you choose.

The three sections & pass marks

The test is split into three sections, and here's the part that catches people out: you have to pass each section on its own. A great score on signs won't rescue a failed rules section — miss the mark in any one and you fail the whole test.

SectionQuestionsYou need
Rules of the road3022 correct
Road signs, signals & markings2823 correct
Vehicle controls86 correct

That's 66 questions in 60 minutes for a light motor vehicle. The signs section is the strictest — you can only afford to miss five — so it's worth the most practice.

1. Rules of the road

Speed limits, following distances, parking, overtaking, right of way, alcohol limits, and what your lights and indicators must do. Mostly numbers and "what do you do when…" scenarios.

2. Road signs, signals & markings

Regulatory, warning and guidance signs, road markings, and traffic-officer hand signals. Recognition is everything here — you either know the sign or you don't, so repetition pays off.

3. Vehicle controls

What the pedals, switches and warning lights do, and how they differ between a motorcycle, a light vehicle and a heavy vehicle. Short section, but you still have to pass it.

What to bring to the DLTC

You'll book a test date in advance and complete a quick eye test at the centre. Requirements vary slightly between provinces and centres, so it's worth phoning ahead to check.

How to prepare

Three things separate people who pass first time from people who rewrite:

Frequently asked questions

How many questions are in the K53 learner's test?

For a light motor vehicle (Code 2) it's 66 multiple-choice questions: 30 rules of the road, 28 road signs and signals, and 8 vehicle controls. The split varies slightly by licence code.

What is the pass mark?

You must pass each section independently: 22 of 30 for rules, 23 of 28 for signs, and 6 of 8 for controls. Fail any one section and you fail the test.

How long does it take?

You get 60 minutes to complete all three sections.

How long is a learner's licence valid?

24 months. You need to get your driving licence before it expires, or you'll have to write the learner's test again.

What if I fail?

You can rebook and rewrite — there's no limit on attempts — but you pay the booking fee again each time. That's why timed practice beforehand is worth it.
